A Balanced Approach to Tech and Learning: Revising the Dynamic Learning Model

In this episode, I revisit my Dynamic Learning Model through the lens of 2024. Technology has become such a huge part of our classrooms, and lately, I’ve been hearing more calls to remove devices completely. There’s definitely a lot to talk about—research shows that tech can be both a game-changer and a challenge in our classrooms. So today, I’m diving into how we can find a better balance between meaningful technology integration and traditional teaching methods.

First, I’ll walk through what the research says. EdTech offers amazing opportunities—tools like simulations, educational games, and AI-powered applications (hello, ChatGPT!) that can boost engagement and help us reach students in ways that weren’t possible before. Tech allows us to differentiate tasks, especially for students who struggle with reading, like using AI to adjust comprehension levels for different learners. But let’s be honest: tech also brings challenges like digital distractions and screen overload. Too much screen time can impact students’ well-being, and it’s our job to find a balance that keeps learning at the forefront.

As I revisit the Dynamic Learning Model, which I introduced in 2018 and slightly updated in 2020, I’m reflecting on how it still holds true today but may need some tweaks to stay relevant. The core of the model is still about learning, not technology. The 4 C’s—Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, and Critical Thinking—are at the heart of it, and when we see great learning happen, it usually involves one or more of these Cs. So, while I’m sticking with the 4 C’s, it’s time to rethink how we plan for tech use in the classroom.

I’ll share practical strategies for blended learning and maintaining digital balance—using tech where it makes sense but not overdoing it. We need to think carefully about when tech enhances learning and when it’s just filling time. Plus, I’ll give you a sneak peek at the new professional learning framework that I’m developing at Shake Up Learning to guide our future content and the brand new ALL ACCESS Membership.

If you’re already an ALL ACCESS member, you can dive deeper into these strategies with exclusive courses and resources designed to help you make the most of technology in your classroom. For those who haven’t joined yet, we’ve got an early bird discount going on—so don’t miss out!

Lastly, don’t forget to check out the AI Quick Tip of the Week, where I’ll show you how to use AI to differentiate reading comprehension tasks for your students.
