Tired of Student AI Slop? Try This Assessment Toolkit!

Tired of Student AI Slop Solve It with the Assessment Puzzle ToolkitIf you’ve been watching students turn in AI-generated essays and wondering what you’re supposed to do about it, Lindy Hockenberry has a practical answer.

Her Assessment Puzzle Framework is built around a simple idea: when a machine can complete your assessment, the assessment needs a redesign.

That doesn’t mean starting from scratch or throwing out everything you’ve built. It means adding layers. A text-only prompt becomes a visual diagram. The diagram gets annotations. The annotations get a voice reflection on top. Each layer you add makes it harder for a student to just paste in an AI response and call it done.

In this session, Lindy walks through the whole framework using a photosynthesis example, introduces the tools that make it work (Snorkl is the star), and makes a compelling case for why using AI inside an assessment, the right way, is actually one of your best defenses against the slop problem.

Tired of Student AI Slop? Solve It with the Assessment Puzzle Toolkit

Description:

Student AI slop is a real problem, and a text-only assessment isn’t going to cut it anymore. In this session, Lindy Hockenberry, K-12 edtech advisor and educator, introduces her Assessment Puzzle Framework, a layered approach to redesigning assignments so that AI can’t just do them for your students.

Using a photosynthesis example, she walks through how to build an assessment piece by piece: starting with text, then adding visuals, annotations, voice reflections, and personal connections. She also makes the case for why using AI as a learning tool inside an assessment (not banning it) is one of the most integrity-preserving moves you can make, and which tools are actually built to guide students rather than just hand them answers.

In this session, you’ll learn:

  • Why text-only assessments are the core of the AI slop problem and what to do about it
  • How the Assessment Puzzle Framework works and how to apply it to any subject or grade level
  • Which puzzle pieces are the most AI-resistant (voice reflections and annotations)
  • How to use tools like Snorkl, School AI Spaces, and Brisk Boost to add guardrails and teacher visibility
  • How to leverage AI as a learning tool without creating a cheating free-for-all
